The 2010 installment kick-started a new era in horror, and since then, Frictional has continued to deliver the scares with subsequent releases. At the end of last year, an announcement trailer for Amnesia: The Bunker was released, giving fans a brief glimpse into the creepiness that awaits. The developer has said that this entry will differ slightly from its predecessors. As well as have a somewhat more open world, one of the most notable differences, according to footage that’s been shown, is that it appears that players will now have a gun at their disposal, which goes against the series’ usual trope of not being able to defend oneself.

Whether this will split the fan base remains to be seen at this stage, but in the meantime, Frictional is holding a “fan jam” contest for a chance to win a copy of Amnesia: The Bunker on PC. According to a recent post on the game’s Steam page, anyone interested is encouraged to participate in the competition, which invites art from all sorts of media, including music, short stories, mods, 2D and 3D artwork, and more. The only stipulation is that it must have something to do with the theme, which is “Frictional Games Monsters,” but even this is open to interpretation. The contest began on January 5 and runs until midnight on January 26, with winners being picked the following Monday. Prizes up for grabs include the aforementioned copy of the game, as well as some A3 posters.
Known for being a game that makes great use of darkness, Amnesia: The Dark Descent was considered a masterful execution in horror gaming, petrifying the living daylights out of players, many of whom would record themselves playing and upload the footage to YouTube in the days before Let’s Plays were commonplace. Since releasing, the game has spawned a number of imitators, such as Outlast, which have improved on Frictional’s original format.
In general, 2023 is a good year for horror fans. With The Bunker due out soon, this will be joined by the remakes of both Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, as well as other titles like Alan Wake 2, STALKER 2, and Layers of Fears. This year is going to be a strong one for those who enjoy digital scares.
Amnesia: The Bunker launches March 2023 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
