Developed by Frictional Games, the team responsible for 2010s genre-defining Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the proceeding Penumbra series, Amnesia: Rebirth was regarded as something of a mixed bag by fans when it first released. Focusing more on a bleak story that centers on trauma and hardship, many found it to be a step in the wrong direction compared to the unforgettably eerie quest to stave off darkness and those that lurk in it that was the original game. That said, the game eventually found its audience, and the general audience consensus grew to be more favorable.

Both Amnesia: Rebirth and Amnesia Collection—a compilation of the first two installments in the series—are set to launch on Xbox Game Pass on October 20. While the former is certainly the marquee entry as a result of its former PlayStation exclusivity, the latter, a duology of indie hits that helped to redefine the psychological horror genre, shouldn’t be overlooked. Were it not for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, landmark horror hits like Outlast, Visage, and even Resident Evil 7 may not have come to fruition.

Terrifying as they are, the Amnesia games aren’t the only horror titles primed to appear on Xbox Game Pass ahead of the Halloween holiday. Frictional Games’ acclaimed submerged spook-fest Soma will also be available, as will the Humble Games-published isometric survival horror title Signalis. Coincidentally, PlayStation’s PS Plus Premium subscription service will actually be axing Soma on October 18, along with the Red Dead Redemption and its horror-themed Undead Nightmare expansion.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are in the mood for horror may also want to check out Scorn, an immersive action-adventure title that doesn’t feel all that far removed from the Amnesia series. Scorn launched last week as an Xbox console exclusive, and, while its relatively hands-off approach to gameplay made it somewhat divisive, it’s still a satisfyingly sick six-hour sequence that checks many of the same boxes as its new Game Pass-cohort Amnesia: Rebirth.
